- Do I need a booking for National Parks? Yes, most state National Parks (NSW, VIC, QLD, etc.) require booking and payment online, often well in advance, especially during peak seasons (holidays and summer). Always check the relevant state park website before arrival.
- What does “Free Camping” actually mean? Free camping refers to designated areas (usually on council land, forestry tracks, or rest stops) where you can legally camp without a nightly fee. Amenities are often minimal or non-existent, so you must be fully self-contained (water, power, toilet). Never camp illegally.
- Can I have a campfire? Only use fire pits provided by the campsite. Always check the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for the relevant state for total fire bans or restrictions, even if a fire pit is available. Never assume a fire is permitted.
