Wellington – Capital Culture & Rugged Coastal Escapes

Nestled between a sparkling harbour and rolling green hills, Wellington is a city that punches well above its weight. It is the political and cultural heart of New Zealand, home to the national museum (Te Papa) and the movie-making magic of "Wellywood."

For campers, Wellington is often a ferry stopover, but it deserves more time. You can stay at Kaitoke Regional Park (a filming location for Rivendell in Lord of the Rings), camp on the wild South Coast near the seal colony, or enjoy a beach break on the Kapiti Coast just an hour north.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The Ferry Connection: It is the departure point for the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries to Picton. Camping nearby ensures you are rested for the early morning crossing.

  • Te Papa Tongarewa: New Zealand’s national museum is world-famous, interactive, and completely free. It’s a must-visit for soaking up Māori and colonial history.

  • Lord of the Rings Locations: Camp at Kaitoke to sleep in "Rivendell," or visit Mount Victoria to see where the Hobbits hid from the Nazgûl.

  • Weta Workshop: Visit the special effects wizards behind The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and District 9 in the suburb of Miramar.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Ride the Cable Car: Take the iconic red cable car from Lambton Quay up to the Botanic Gardens for stunning views over the city and harbour.

  • Walk to Red Rocks (Pariwhero): A coastal walk from Owhiro Bay to see ancient red volcanic rocks and a colony of fur seals (in winter).

  • Zealandia Ecosanctuary: The world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. You can spot wild Kiwi, Tuatara, and Takahe just minutes from the CBD.

  • Craft Beer Tour: Wellington is the craft beer capital of NZ. Explore the "beer mile" of breweries and taprooms in the city centre.

  • Putangirua Pinnacles: A day trip to the Wairarapa coast (near Wellington) to see the eerie "Paths of the Dead" rock formations.
