About This Campsite

Putangirua Pinnacles Campsite is a DOC standard campsite nestled beside the Putangirua Stream in the southern Wairarapa, with views across to Cook Strait and a pebbly beach just across the road. The campsite serves as the trailhead for the spectacular Putangirua Pinnacles, towering earth pillar formations carved over millions of years by erosion. These otherworldly hoodoos were used as the filming location for the Paths of the Dead in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and standing among these pillars it is easy to see why Peter Jackson chose this spot.

The campsite has 50 non-powered sites on level ground, suitable for tents, campervans, and caravans. Facilities are basic but functional, with flush toilets and a shelter. Tap water is available but not safe for drinking, so bring your own supply. Campfires are permitted in designated fireplaces when there is no regional fire ban in effect. No booking is required as sites operate first-come, first-served year-round. Payment is by DOC Campsite Pass or cash at the self-registration stand. Dogs are welcome on a leash. The campsite is 58km south of Martinborough via Lake Ferry Road, turning onto Cape Palliser Road and continuing for approximately 13km. Phone signal is limited.

The Pinnacles Ridge Track is the main attraction, a moderate 3km loop taking two to two and a half hours with around 290m of elevation gain. The track follows the streambed before climbing to a lookout with dramatic views across the pinnacle formations and surrounding landscape. Sturdy footwear is essential for the rocky riverbed, and the stream can rise quickly after rain, so check conditions with DOC before heading out. Beyond the pinnacles, the remote Cape Palliser coastline offers plenty of exploration. The Cape Palliser lighthouse and its famous 250 steps sit at the southern tip, and the nearby seal colony at Cape Palliser is one of the largest in the North Island. The charming wine village of Martinborough is within an hour’s drive.
