Auckland - The City of Sails & Camping Trails

While it’s New Zealand’s largest city, the Auckland region is surprisingly wild. Just 45 minutes from the Sky Tower, you can be lost in the native rainforest of the Waitākere Ranges or walking on a deserted black-sand beach.

For campers, Auckland has one of the best "Regional Park" networks in the country. You can stay at incredible council-run beachfront campsites like Tāwharanui and Shakespeare Regional Park, or enjoy urban comfort at holiday parks in Takapuna and Orewa where you can wake up and walk to a cafe.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The West Coast: Famous for its rugged beauty, black sand, and surf. Visit Piha, Muriwai, or Karekare (where The Piano was filmed).

  • Hauraki Gulf Islands: Take a ferry to Waiheke Island for beaches and wineries, or Great Barrier Island for a true off-grid wilderness camping experience.

  • Regional Parks: Auckland Council manages 28 regional parks. Sites like Tāwharanui offer open sanctuaries where you can camp behind predator-proof fences with Kiwi birds and Bellbirds.

  • Matakana Coast: Just an hour north, this area is famous for its Saturday Farmers' Market, boutique cinemas, and stunning beaches like Pakiri.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Walk the Tongariro of the North: The Te Henga Walkway on the West Coast offers cliff-top views that rival any Great Walk.

  • Climb a Volcano: Hike up Mount Eden (Maungawhau) or Rangitoto Island (a volcano that emerged from the sea only 600 years ago) for panoramic views.

  • See the Gannets: Visit the gannet colony at Muriwai Beach (Aug-March) to see thousands of large seabirds nesting on the cliffs.

  • Goat Island Marine Reserve: New Zealand’s first marine reserve. The snapper here are so friendly (and huge) they will swim right up to your snorkel mask.

  • Urban Beach Camping: Stay at Takapuna Beach Holiday Park for the rare chance to camp on a white sand beach while looking directly at the city skyline and Rangitoto.
