Generally, no. Most coastal councils (Gold Coast, Byron, Surf Coast) have bylaws prohibiting sleeping in vehicles on public roads. Inland towns are often more relaxed, but always check signs.

Q: How much are the fines?

NZ: $400 for freedom camping in a non-self-contained vehicle. QLD: $322 on the spot (Noosa/Sunshine Coast are strict). NSW: Ranges from $110 to $300 depending on the council.

Q: Does a "Self-Contained" sticker mean I can camp anywhere in NZ?

No. It means you can camp on Council land that permits freedom camping. It does not allow you to camp on private land or in "No Camping" zones.

Q: Are portable toilets banned in NZ?

No. You can still use them, but you cannot get a Green Warrant with one. This means you are restricted to staying in paid campgrounds or designated DOC sites with facilities. You cannot freedom camp.
