Question 1

Is a swag warmer than a tent?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes. Canvas is a better insulator than polyester tent fabric, and the compact space of a swag means your body heat warms it quickly. In cold conditions below 5 degrees Celsius, a good canvas swag with the right sleeping bag is very warm. Tents require a proper sleeping bag and mat to match that warmth.

Question 2

Can kids sleep in a swag?

Accepted Answer

Older kids, yes. Teenagers can handle a single swag perfectly well. For children under about 8 or 9, a swag is awkward: they cannot zip themselves in, they roll off the mattress, and they still want to come find you at night. A tent with a large floor area is far more practical for primary school age children.

Question 3

Do swags work in the rain?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only if you have seasoned the canvas first. A brand new swag will leak at the stitching seams in heavy rain. You need to soak it with a hose 3 to 4 times and let it dry completely before relying on it in wet conditions. Once properly seasoned, a quality canvas swag handles Australian rain very well.

Question 4

What size tent do I need for a family of four?

Accepted Answer

Use the Tent Plus Two Rule: take the number of people and add two. A family of four needs at least a 6-person tent, and ideally an 8 or 10-person model if you want room to stand, store bags, and not feel like you are sleeping in a cupboard. Our family tent guide covers the best options in detail.

Question 5

Are swags only for Australian camping?

Accepted Answer

They are popular in Australia and New Zealand but work anywhere. The canvas and self-contained design suits the Australian bush particularly well because of the heat, dust, and the culture of moving between remote campsites. They are less common in European or American camping simply because the touring culture there is different.
