Granite Gorge Nature Park
About This Campsite
Granite Gorge Nature Park is the “cheat code” for parents who have promised their kids they will see Australian wildlife. Unlike National Parks where you have to be quiet and lucky, here the rare Mareeba Rock Wallabies are practically tame. You buy a bag of pellets at reception, and within five minutes, the kids will have wallabies hopping into their laps. It is the easiest “Dad Win” on the Atherton Tablelands. The camping itself is relaxed bush-style, offering both powered and unpowered sites scattered around the granite boulders. The Warning: While the “Gorge Walk” is spectacular, do not underestimate the physical toll. It is not a flat path; it involves genuine rock scrambling over massive boulders. If you have bad knees or toddlers with short legs, you will be carrying them (or hurting) by the end. The park also features a weir for swimming, which is a blessing in the Tablelands heat, and unlike most wildlife zones, it is surprisingly dog-friendly (must be on a leash at all times). Facilities are rustic but functional, with hot showers and a camp kitchen, but don’t expect 5-star resort tiling—you are here for the rocks and the animals.
