Otago – Gold Rush History & High Country Trails

Otago is home to New Zealand’s most famous camping destinations. In the west, you have the Southern Lakes district—a playground for skiers, hikers, and thrill-seekers. In the east, the historic city of Dunedin offers heritage architecture and some of the world’s rarest wildlife on the Otago Peninsula.

For campers, the options are endless. You can park your motorhome at a luxury "glamping" park in Queenstown, freedom camp (responsibly!) near the vineyards of Central Otago, or find a remote beachside spot in The Catlins where sea lions might wander past your tent.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The Adventure Capital: Queenstown is world-famous for bungy jumping, jet boating, and skiing. Camping here puts you right in the heart of the action.

  • Lake Wanaka: Slightly quieter than its neighbor, Wanaka offers stunning lakeside camping and access to arguably the best day hikes in the country.

  • Wildlife Capital: The Otago Peninsula near Dunedin is the only place in the world to see Royal Albatross nesting on the mainland, plus Yellow-eyed Penguins and fur seals.

  • Gold Rush History: Explore the preserved gold mining town of Arrowtown or camp in the stark, beautiful landscape of Central Otago.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Hike Roy's Peak: The famous zig-zag track in Wanaka that offers the most photographed view in New Zealand.

  • Cycle the Otago Central Rail Trail: A flat, scenic 150km trail that follows an old railway line through gorges and historic towns (great for a multi-day ride).

  • Visit Larnach Castle: New Zealand's only castle, perched high above the Otago Peninsula with incredible gardens.

  • Blue Pools Walk: A short walk through beech forest near Makarora to see crystal clear, deep blue glacial pools (brave a swim if you dare!).

  • Eat a Fergburger: It’s a rite of passage for any camper in Queenstown to wait in line for one of these legendary burgers.

There is a specific sound that haunts every Australian camper. It’s not the howl of a dingo. It’s the scritch-scratch of a possum trying to open your Esky at 2 AM. Or worse: it’s the silence of waking up, pouring a bowl of Nutri-Grain, and realizing the “raisins” are actually 500 meat ants swarming your…

Don’t be a statistic. That sounds dramatic, I know. But if you’ve ever tried to find a pair of tweezers in a $20 supermarket first aid kit while your 6-year-old screams about a splinter, you know that panic is the enemy. Most of us treat first aid kits as a “tick box” item. We chuck…
