Northland – The Winterless North & Kauri Coastlines

Stretching from Auckland all the way to the very tip of New Zealand at Cape Reinga, Northland is a region of two coastlines. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway lets you explore the rugged, wild Tasman Sea on the west and the sheltered, golden bays of the Pacific Ocean on the east.

For campers, this is arguably the best region in the country for a "beach bum" holiday. You can park your campervan right on the water’s edge at Matauri Bay, stay in historic Russell, or explore the giant sand dunes of the Far North from a base at Ahipara.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The Weather: It’s called the "Winterless North" for a reason. The subtropical climate makes it perfect for swimming and camping almost year-round.

  • The Bay of Islands: A collection of 144 islands with turquoise water. It’s a paradise for sailing, fishing, and kayaking.

  • Māori Culture: Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the most significant historic site in New Zealand, to understand the nation's history.

  • Ancient Giants: Walk among the Tāne Mahuta (Lord of the Forest), a giant Kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest that is over 2,000 years old.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Drive 90 Mile Beach: Officially a highway, this vast stretch of sand is drivable (4WD recommended) and creates an unforgettable road trip experience.

  • Sandboarding at Te Paki: Grab a board and slide down the massive giant sand dunes near Cape Reinga.

  • Cape Reinga Lighthouse: Walk to the northernmost accessible point of NZ to see the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea crash together in a swirling line of foam.

  • Fish & Chips in Mangonui: Stop at the world-famous Mangonui Fish Shop, which sits over the water, for the freshest snapper you’ll ever eat.

  • Dive the Rainbow Warrior: For experienced divers, the wreck of the Greenpeace ship near the Cavalli Islands is a bucket-list dive site.

There is a specific sound that haunts every Australian camper. It’s not the howl of a dingo. It’s the scritch-scratch of a possum trying to open your Esky at 2 AM.
