Nelson Tasman - New Zealand’s Sunshine Capital

This region offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. It is the only place in New Zealand where you can find three national parks—Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and Nelson Lakes—all within a 90-minute drive of a vibrant city centre.

For campers, the variety is incredible. You can stay at the popular Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve (the gateway to the park), freedom camp in Golden Bay, or find a riverside DOC spot in the Buller Gorge.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • Abel Tasman National Park: Famous for its golden sand beaches and turquoise water. You can camp right on the beach at Totaranui or kayak to secluded boat-access-only sites.

  • The Weather: Nelson consistently holds the title for the most sunshine hours in New Zealand, making it perfect for tent camping year-round.

  • Arts & Craft Beer: Nelson is the craft brewing capital of NZ (thanks to the local hops) and home to hundreds of working artists and galleries.

  • Golden Bay: Drive over scenic Tākaka Hill to find a bohemian paradise of stunning beaches, fresh springs, and relaxed campsites.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Kayak the Coast: Rent a kayak or take a tour from Mārahau or Kaiteriteri to explore the bays and see the famous Split Apple Rock.

  • Visit Te Waikoropupū Springs: See some of the clearest freshwater in the world in Golden Bay.

  • Walk the Abel Tasman Coast Track: Even if you don't do the full multi-day Great Walk, you can take a water taxi to a beach and walk a section as a day trip.

  • Cycle the Great Taste Trail: A network of cycle trails that lets you ride from the city to the vineyards and coast, tasting local food and wine along the way.

  • Lake Rotoiti: Visit Nelson Lakes National Park to jump off the famous jetty and feed the eels (just watch out for sandflies!).

There is a specific sound that haunts every Australian camper. It’s not the howl of a dingo. It’s the scritch-scratch of a possum trying to open your Esky at 2 AM. Or worse: it’s the silence of waking up, pouring a bowl of Nutri-Grain, and realizing the “raisins” are actually 500 meat ants swarming your…
