Manawatū-Whanganui - The Heartland of Adventure

This region is often the unsung hero of the North Island. It combines the lush, emerald hills of the Manawatū with the raw, volcanic power of the Central Plateau and the history of the Whanganui River.

For campers, this is "Great Walk" territory. You can embark on the Whanganui Journey (a multi-day canoe trip with riverside campsites), stay in the alpine town of Ohakune (the carrot capital!), or find a peaceful spot near the Manawatū Gorge.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The Whanganui River: New Zealand’s longest navigable river. Camping at the DOC sites along the riverbanks (accessible only by canoe or jet boat) is a bucket-list experience.

  • Tongariro National Park: While often associated with Taupō, the southern gateway (Ohakune) is in this region. It’s the perfect base for hiking the Tongariro Crossing or skiing Tūroa.

  • The Country Road: Take the scenic back roads through the Rangitīkei district to see white cliffs, green valleys, and hidden swimming holes.

  • Te Apiti (Manawatū Gorge): A spectacular geological landmark where the river cuts through the mountain range. The camping nearby is quiet and scenic.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Canoe to the Bridge to Nowhere: Paddle deep into the national park to find an abandoned concrete bridge in the middle of the bush.

  • Ski an Active Volcano: In winter, park your campervan in Ohakune and hit the slopes of Mount Ruapehu.

  • Visit the National Army Museum: Located in Waiouru, this is a fascinating stop for history buffs driving down the Desert Road.

  • Cycle the Timber Trail: Ride through ancient forests and across massive suspension bridges (one of NZ’s best Great Rides).

  • Durie Hill Elevator: Visit Whanganui city and ride the historic underground elevator to the top of the hill for incredible views over the river mouth.

There is a specific sound that haunts every Australian camper. It’s not the howl of a dingo. It’s the scritch-scratch of a possum trying to open your Esky at 2 AM.
