Victoria (VIC) – High Country & Rugged Coasts

Victoria packs a punch for its size. The weather is famously fickle ("four seasons in one day" is a real warning, not a cliché), so your gear needs to be up to scratch. This is the state for hikers and road-trippers who want dramatic scenery without driving for three days straight.

☀️ Best Time to Visit

Verdict: March (Autumn). The Summer heatwaves are gone, but the Winter gloom hasn't set in yet.

Summer (Dec-Feb)
14°C - 26°C - Hot spells likely
Autumn (Mar-May)
11°C - 20°C - Most Stable
Winter (Jun-Aug)
6°C - 14°C - Cold & Rainy
Spring (Sep-Nov)
9°C - 20°C - Very erratic
⚠️ Watch Out: "The Change." Temps can drop 15°C in 20 minutes when a cold front hits. Always pack a jacket.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • The Great Ocean Road: It’s an iconic drive, but the camping at places like Wye River or Cape Otway lets you sleep under koala-filled gum trees near the Southern Ocean.

  • The Grampians (Gariwerd): Incredible sandstone peaks rising out of farmland. It’s the hiking capital of the state with excellent central campsites like Halls Gap.

  • Victorian High Country: This is "Man from Snowy River" territory. If you have a 4WD, the remote camping along the King River or near Craig’s Hut is unbeatable.

  • Wilsons Promontory: Known locally as "The Prom." It’s a granite peninsula protected as a national park. The tidal river camping ground is legendary (and hard to book).

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Walk the Pinnacle: A steep, rocky hike in the Grampians that rewards you with hair-raising views over the jagged ranges.

  • Spot a Wild Koala: Camp at Bimbi Park in Cape Otway; it’s one of the few places where you’re almost guaranteed to sleep under a koala.

  • Squeaky Beach: Visit Wilsons Prom to walk on quartz sand so rounded it actually squeaks under your boots.

  • Drive the Silo Art Trail: A great option for campervans in the Wimmera Mallee region. It turns a long, flat drive into an open-air art gallery.

  • Free Camp on the Murray: The Victorian side of the Murray River has hundreds of free, dispersed campsites. Just bring a fishing rod and watch out for snags.

Victoria Gear Essentials

Victoria doesn't do "mild." It does blistering heat and freezing rain, often on the same Tuesday.

  • Shelter: Bring a Heavy-Duty Tarp or Gazebo. You will need rain cover.
  • Clothing: A proper Gore-Tex jacket is non-negotiable.
  • Sleep: The ground gets cold. Use an Insulated Mat (R-Value 3+).

The Golden Rule: Guy ropes are not optional in Vic. Peg out every single line before you crack a beer.

🏆 Our "Add to Cart" Recommendations:

  • Best Shelter Add-on: Coleman Deluxe Gazebo – Sturdy legs that handle the Gippsland gales.
  • Best Sleep Mat: Exped Megamat 10 – High R-value keeps the ground chill away.
