Tasmania (TAS) – The Hiker’s Paradise

Tasmania is the closest you’ll get to New Zealand in Australia. It’s cold, green, and mountainous. The "tramping" (bushwalking) here is world-class. If you are testing cold-weather gear, this is your lab.

☀️ Best Time to Visit

Verdict: February is the sweet spot. Warm ground, fewer crowds.

Summer (Dec-Feb)
11°C - 23°C - Busy but warm
Autumn (Mar-May)
8°C - 17°C - Best colours
Winter (Jun-Aug)
3°C - 11°C - Snow possible
Spring (Sep-Nov)
7°C - 16°C - Wet & Windy
⚠️ Watch Out: The UV Index. Tassie sun burns faster at 20°C than QLD at 30°C.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • East Coast: The Bay of Fires and Freycinet National Park offer stunning coastal camping with orange lichen-covered rocks and white sand.

  • Cradle Mountain: The heart of Tassie wilderness. Even if you don't hike the full Overland Track, camping near the park entrance puts you in wombat territory.

  • The Southwest: Remote, wild, and wet. For serious hikers only.

  • Bruny Island: Accessible by ferry, offering gourmet food (cheese, oysters) and great camping at majestic spots like The Neck.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • The Overland Track: The holy grail of Aussie hiking. It’s a 6-day trek, but you can do day walks from Cradle Mountain if you aren't up for the full slog.

  • Bay of Fires Free Camping: Camp at Swimcart Beach or Cosy Corner. It’s free (for now) and right on the pristine white sand.

  • Meet a Tasmanian Devil: Visit a sanctuary near Cradle Mountain or the Tasman Peninsula to see these feisty marsupials feeding.

  • Port Arthur Ghost Tour: Camp at the nearby holiday park and take a night tour of the convict ruins. It’s spooky history at its best.

  • Walk Wineglass Bay: The climb to the lookout is steep but short. The view of the perfectly curved bay is the postcard shot of Tasmania.

TL;DR: Tasmania Gear Essentials

Tassie is stunning, but it bites. If you aren't warm, you aren't having fun.

  • Sleep: A Sub-Zero Sleeping Bag (-5°C min) is mandatory, even in summer.
  • Cooking: Gas struggles in the cold. Use a Jetboil or liquid fuel stove.
  • Clothing: Merino layers. Cotton kills in this climate.

The Golden Rule: Ignore the "Extreme" rating on bags. Look at the "Comfort" rating. It must be below 0°C.

🏆 Our "Add to Cart" Recommendations:

  • Best Bag: Sea to Summit Trek TkII – Down filled, rectangle shape for comfort, warm enough for Tassie.
  • Best Stove: Jetboil Flash – Boils water in 100 seconds, regardless of wind.
