South Australia (SA) – Wine, Wildlife & Outback

South Australia is often underrated, but it holds some of the best "touring" camping in the country. It’s famous for its jagged coastlines and easy access to the real outback without needing a convoy.

☀️ Best Time to Visit

Verdict: Autumn (March-May). The festivals are on, the vineyards look great, and you won't bake in a tent.

Summer (Dec-Feb)
17°C - 30°C - Dry & Scorching
Autumn (Mar-May)
13°C - 23°C - Mild Days
Winter (Jun-Aug)
8°C - 16°C - Green & Cool
Spring (Sep-Nov)
11°C - 22°C - Windy
⚠️ Watch Out: Flies. If you go Outback (Flinders Ranges) in warm weather, bring a head net.

Why Go Camping Here?

  • Eyre Peninsula: The "Seafood Frontier." Camp on cliff tops looking down at the Great Australian Bight. It’s raw, windy, and spectacular.

  • Flinders Ranges: The accessible outback. Ancient landscapes, red dust, and old gum trees. Wilpena Pound is a geological marvel you can camp right next to.

  • Limestone Coast: Famous for the Blue Lake and sunken gardens. It’s a green, lush contrast to the rest of the state.

  • Yorke Peninsula: A favourite for Adelaide locals. It’s all about fishing, crabbing, and relaxed beach camping.

Must-Do Camping Activities

  • Walk inside Wilpena Pound: A natural amphitheatre of mountains. The hike to St Mary Peak offers 360-degree views of the red plains.

  • Swim in a Sinkhole: The Little Blue Lake near Mount Gambier is a sinkhole in a paddock you can swim in. Cold, deep, and unique.

  • Cage Dive with Sharks: If you’re brave, head to Port Lincoln. If not, just camp at Coffin Bay National Park and watch the emus walk through the water.

  • Drive on the Beach: Robe to Beachport is a fantastic soft-sand 4WD track for experienced drivers.

  • Underground Camping: In Coober Pedy, you can stay in underground dugouts to escape the heat—a very literal "cool" experience.

There is a specific sound that haunts every Australian camper. It’s not the howl of a dingo. It’s the scritch-scratch of a possum trying to open your Esky at 2 AM. Don’t be a statistic. That sounds dramatic, I know. But if you’ve ever tried to find a pair of tweezers in a $20 supermarket first aid kit while your 6-year-old screams about a splinter, you know that panic is the enemy. Most of us treat first aid kits as a “tick box” item. We chuck…
