About This Campsite
Uloola Falls Campground is the smallest and most remote campground in Royal National Park, sitting next to a two-tiered waterfall deep in the park’s heathland, about an hour south of Sydney. Six sites, no vehicle access, no drinking water, pit toilets only. It’s a proper overnight hiking destination rather than a weekend camping spot, and it works best as a one-night stop on a multi-day loop between Waterfall and Heathcote.
The six unmarked sites are on a grassy flat next to Uloola Falls. The waterfall itself has a cascading upper section and a long lower drop, with a swimming hole at the base surrounded by sandstone and native bush. Maximum 18 campers, and the maximum stay is one night. The site becomes boggy after rain so check the forecast and NPWS alerts before setting out. No caravans, no vehicles, no mountain bikes beyond the fire trail access point.
Facilities are minimal: pit toilets and that’s it. No drinking water on site. The nearby creek can be treated or filtered but bring your own supply to be safe. No fires at all in Royal National Park. Fuel stoves only. No bins, pack out all rubbish. No mobile reception. Park vehicle entry fee does not apply when accessing on foot via the train stations.
Two access routes. From Waterfall Station: the Uloola Track starts at the rear of the station carpark and follows an easy fire trail for about 5km to the campground, roughly 2.5 hours. This is the better route for first-timers and mountain bikers. From Heathcote Station: the Karloo Track is a 2.5 hour medium-difficulty walk on narrow bush tracks, passing Karloo Pool, which is worth the detour for a swim. The classic overnight loop is to arrive via one track and leave via the other. Spring wildflower displays on the heathland are exceptional, particularly gymea lilies.
Booking is essential via NPWS, up to 6 months in advance. One night maximum stay is strictly enforced. The campground books out for long weekends and school holidays. No pets. Check NPWS local alerts for any closures before your hike.
