Swimcart Beach Campground (Bay of Fires)

Address: Binalong Bay, Tasmania 7216, Binalong Bay, Tasmania, Australia, 7216

About This Campsite

Swimcart Beach Campground is free camping at Tasmania’s Bay of Fires, and if you haven’t seen this coastline before, prepare yourself. The orange lichen-covered granite boulders against white sand and clear blue water look like something from a travel magazine, except you’re sleeping right next to it for zero dollars.

The campground is basic and that’s the appeal. Pit toilets, no showers, no power, no bins, no drinking water. You set up on sandy ground behind the dunes with the sound of waves as your soundtrack. Dogs are welcome on leash, which makes this one of the few genuinely beautiful Tasmanian campsites where your four-legged mate can join you. Fires are permitted in designated areas (check conditions first).

Dolphins are regular visitors just off the beach, and the snorkelling is excellent if you can handle the cold water. Binalong Bay is a short drive for supplies, and St Helens is about 10 minutes away. Sandflies can be fierce on still days, so bring repellent and long sleeves for dusk. No bookings required, just turn up and find a spot. It’s first come, first served camping at its Tasmanian best.
