Lorella Springs Wilderness Park
About This Campsite
Lorella Springs Wilderness Park is a million-acre private cattle station fronting the Gulf of Carpentaria in one of the most remote corners of the Northern Territory. For over 20 years, the Walker family opened their property to independent travellers, offering thermal hot springs, safe swimming holes, waterfalls, 4WD tracks, barramundi fishing and bush camping across an area twice the size of the ACT. The homestead campground sat beside the Magical Spring, a crystal-clear thermal pool lined with pandanus palms where guests could soak under the stars beside a campfire.
The property features multiple natural attractions including the Valley of the Springs with its hot and cold water sources, the Helicopter Pool surrounded by rock cliffs, and 25 kilometres of ocean frontage on the Gulf coast. Birdwatching, freshwater fishing, kayaking through gorges and exploring remote bush tracks once made this a bucket-list destination for outback adventurers. Accommodation previously included camping, air-conditioned cabins, and deluxe en-suite rooms, with meals and a licensed bar at the homestead.
Important: as of 2023, Lorella Springs is closed to independent drive-in visitors. The property remains accessible only through registered 4WD guided tour groups. This was a difficult decision for the Walker family, driven by increasing regulatory pressures on their remote tourism operation. Check the official website or contact the station directly for the latest access information and details of tour operators currently running trips to the property. The dry season from April to September was traditionally the operating period.
