Glentanner Park Centre
About This Campsite
Glentanner Park Centre is the “civilized” base camp for Aoraki/Mount Cook. The strategic decision here is simple: do you want to camp right at the trailhead (White Horse Hill) and freeze in an unpowered site, or do you drive 20 minutes and get a hot shower and a heater? Glentanner is the latter. It is the only fully serviced holiday park in the region, offering powered sites, a fully equipped kitchen, and a heated lounge—amenities that are absolute gold when the alpine weather turns nasty. The views are still world-class; on a clear day, you can see Aoraki towering over the lake right from your breakfast table. The Dad Reality Check: You are camping on an active airfield. This is the base for The Helicopter Line, which is cool for the kids to watch, but it means there is engine noise during the day. Also, the park sits in the Tasman Valley wind funnel. If the nor-wester is blowing, it will rip through here, so strap everything down. Access is sealed and easy for even the largest fifth-wheelers and buses, unlike the tight corners of the DOC camp. There is a decent cafe on-site for your morning caffeine fix, but stock up on groceries in Twizel before you arrive—the local selection is thin and pricey.
