About This Campsite

Discovery Parks Cradle Mountain is the strategic command centre for any family tackling the Overland Track or just doing the Dove Lake circuit. Located right across the road from the National Park Visitor Centre, it is the logistical “easy button” for accessing the shuttle buses—meaning you don’t have to fight for the limited public parking at the lake. The park is set in native bushland, and the absolute highlight for the kids is the resident wombats; they graze openly on the sites at dusk, which is better than any zoo. The Dad Reality Check: You are in an alpine environment. Even in January, it can snow. Do not bring the “summer” sleeping bags; bring the -5°C rated ones. The park knows this, offering the single most valuable amenity in Tasmania: a dedicated Drying Room. When you come back soaked from a hike, being able to dry your boots and jackets overnight is a morale saver. The camp kitchens are enclosed and heated (essential), offering a warm place to cook when it is sleeting outside. Access is fully sealed and suitable for all rigs. Dog-friendly on sites (check restrictions), but remember: pets are strictly banned in the National Park itself, so you need a plan for them while you hike.
