About This Campsite
Buchan Caves Campground delivers the best “wildlife safari” experience in Victoria without leaving the bitumen. You aren’t just near the caves; you are camping on the manicured lawns directly outside the tour entrance, surrounded by towering European trees that give it a unique “parkland” feel. The big drawcard here for the kids is the resident population of Eastern Grey Kangaroos. They are everywhere, tame enough to graze right next to your tent pegs (but don’t feed them). Logistically, it is excellent for families: you have fully powered sites, a camp kitchen, and hot showers—which are absolutely critical because this valley acts like a refrigerator. Dad Tip: Even in summer, the temperature drops like a stone once the sun goes behind the valley walls. Bring warmer sleeping bags than you think you need. The pool is fed by subterranean rivers and is “refreshing” (read: freezing), perfect for a dare on a hot day. It’s fully 2WD accessible and friendly for caravans and big rigs, but book ahead during school holidays as it fills up with cave-goers. Strictly no pets.
