El Questro Station
About This Campsite
El Questro Station is essentially the “Disneyland of the Kimberley”—it is big, polished, expensive, and absolutely essential. For many families, this is the soft entry into the Gibb River Road experience because you can actually get to the main station township with a high-clearance 2WD or soft-roader (though the driveway is 16km of corrugations). The camping happens at Black Cockatoo Campground, which acts as the central hub. It offers powered and unpowered sites, modern amenities, and coin laundries. The “Dad Win” here is the infrastructure: after a dusty day hiking, you can hit the Swinging Arm Bar for a cold beer and a burger while the kids run around on the grass. You are staying here for one reason: access. You are the base camp for Zebedee Springs (thermal pools), El Questro Gorge, and Emma Gorge. Crucially: You must plan your mornings. Zebedee Springs is strictly open to the general public only from 7am to 12pm. If you sleep in, you miss it. Also, be prepared for the “hidden” cost: on top of your camping fees, every adult must pay for a Wilderness Park Permit. It adds up, so budget for it. Dogs are allowed in the campground (on a leash) but are strictly forbidden in the gorges and springs, so you need a plan for them during the day.
