Whitehaven Beach Camping Area
About This Campsite
Whitehaven Beach Camping Area sits behind one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in Australia, tucked into lowland vine forest at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. The beach itself stretches over seven kilometres of pure white silica sand, and the camping area provides the only way to experience it overnight after the day-trip boats have departed. Access is exclusively by boat from Airlie Beach, with operators like Scamper and Cruise Whitsundays running regular transfers.
The campground offers 10 designated sites with a maximum capacity of 36 campers. Facilities are intentionally basic to preserve the island’s natural character: hybrid composting toilets, picnic tables, and tent platforms are provided, but there is no drinking water, no power, and no rubbish collection. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing all water, food, cooking equipment, and carrying out everything they bring in. A gas stove is essential as campfires are not permitted.
Bookings are managed through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and are essential during peak periods, particularly over school holidays and between June and October. Camping fees are $7.25 per person per night (family rates available). The reward for the extra planning is unmatched: swimming in crystal-clear turquoise water, walking to the famous Hill Inlet lookout at low tide, and falling asleep to the sound of waves on one of the world’s top-rated beaches.
