Springlawn Campground - Narawntapu National Park
About This Campsite
Springlawn Campground is the main camping area within Narawntapu National Park, often called Tasmania’s Serengeti for the sheer volume of wildlife that grazes its open plains at dusk. Located on the central north coast, the park is just 40 minutes east of Devonport and about an hour from Launceston, making it one of the most accessible national park campgrounds in the state. Springlawn offers both powered and unpowered sites suitable for caravans, campervans, camper trailers, and tents, with some sites accessible for wheelchair users.
Facilities at Springlawn are among the best of any Tasmanian national park campground. The amenities block includes flushing toilets (wheelchair accessible from the rear entrances), a shower block with 4-minute tokens available from the adjacent Visitor Centre, free electric BBQs, and a blackwater dump point. Camping fees start at $13 per night for two adults on an unpowered site or $16 for a powered site, with additional adults at $5/$7 and children aged 5 to 17 at $2.50/$3.50. A Tasmania Parks Pass is required on top of camping fees. No bookings are taken except for large school groups, so during summer and holiday periods it pays to arrive early. After-hours self-registration is available at the Visitor Centre (cash required).
The wildlife alone makes this campground worth the trip. Forester kangaroos, the largest marsupial in Tasmania, congregate on Springlawn Plain at dusk in impressive numbers. Wombats, Bennett’s wallabies, and pademelons are common around camp, and the park has recorded more than 116 bird species including green rosellas, black cockatoos, and white-bellied sea eagles. The Springlawn Nature Walk (4.8km circuit) takes you past the lagoon bird hide, while the more challenging Archers Knob track rewards with panoramic views over Bakers Beach. Bakers Beach itself is a stunning stretch of sand just a short drive from camp, popular for swimming and fishing.
