Rapid Bay Campground
About This Campsite
Rapid Bay Campground is a no-frills beachfront camping spot on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, roughly 100 kilometres south of Adelaide. The campground sits right on the sand between a long sandy beach and towering limestone cliffs, with around 50 unpowered sites spread across grassy and gravel areas. It is one of the most affordable beach camping options in the state, and the Rapid Bay jetty is famous among divers as one of Australia’s premier jetty dive sites. The old pylons are home to leafy sea dragons, soft coral, sea squirts and colourful marine invertebrates.
Facilities are basic but functional. Flush toilets are available in the camping area, along with cold outdoor showers and non-potable water (boil before drinking). Free electric and gas BBQs are provided in a well-lit undercover area with tables and seats, and a children’s playground sits adjacent. There are no powered sites, no camp kitchen and no drinking water, so bring everything you need. Dogs are permitted on a leash. Campfires are not allowed, though gas BBQs are fine for cooking.
Bookings are required and can be made by calling (08) 8598 3003. Fees are $12.50 per adult per night and $7.50 per child, rising to $15 per adult on public holidays. Check-in runs from 11am to 5pm with a 10am checkout. The nearest supplies are at Delamere General Store, a short drive away. Second Valley, Deep Creek National Park and the Cape Jervis ferry terminal to Kangaroo Island are all within easy reach. Between May and October, keep an eye on the cliffs for southern right whales cruising along the coast.
