Port Jackson DOC Campsite
About This Campsite
Port Jackson DOC Campsite sits at the very northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula, right at the water’s edge beside a sheltered bay with crystal-clear water. This is one of the most remote campsites you can reach by vehicle in the North Island, and that remoteness is exactly what draws people here. The setting is spectacular, with coastal views stretching across the Hauraki Gulf and native bush climbing the surrounding hillsides. It’s classified as a backcountry campsite, so expect minimal facilities and maximum scenery.
Facilities are basic but functional. Long-drop composting toilets are spread throughout the campground, and cold outdoor showers are available. There’s a covered BBQ area with free gas barbecues, sink benches, and picnic tables overlooking the beach. Powered sites are available for caravans and campervans. Water is sourced from a nearby stream and should be boiled or treated before drinking. This is a pack-in, pack-out site with no rubbish collection. Open fires and fireworks are banned at all times, and only gas cookers and lanterns are permitted. Bookings must be made online, and check-in starts from 2pm.
The bay is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and kayaking, with remarkably clear water that often attracts dolphins. At the eastern end of the campsite, the Muriwai Coastal Walk leads up the headland towards Wharekaiatua Pa, offering outstanding coastal views. The Coromandel Walkway to Fletcher Bay also starts nearby. Getting here requires a long drive on unsealed, narrow, and winding roads from Coromandel township, and a reliable, well-maintained vehicle is strongly recommended. The nearest shops are in Colville, about 30km south. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable, so come prepared for a genuine off-grid experience.
