Maitai Bay Campsite
About This Campsite
Maitai Bay Campsite occupies a sheltered position on the outer Karikari Peninsula in Northland’s Far North, about 44 kilometres northeast of Kaitaia. Managed by the Department of Conservation, this standard-category campsite sits among beautiful pohutukawa trees with direct access to a white-sand beach flanked by rocky headlands perfect for snorkelling. The bay itself is a protected cove, making it one of the more sheltered swimming spots in the region.
Facilities are basic but functional: flush toilets, cold outdoor showers, water taps, picnic tables, and a boat launching area. There is no power, no kitchen shelter, and no rubbish bins outside peak season. From December to February, rubbish is collected daily (council fees per bag apply), but at all other times you must carry out everything you bring in. Open fires are not permitted at any time due to high fire danger on the peninsula. The last two kilometres of Maitai Bay Road are gravel, accessible by caravan and campervan with care.
The campsite operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings available. It fills completely during Christmas, New Year, school holidays, and good-weather long weekends, so arrive early or have a backup plan. DOC Campsite Passes are accepted, or you can pay by cash or EFTPOS to camp managers during peak season. A rahui (customary fishing ban) laid by Te Whanau Moana/Te Rorohuri is in place across the bay to allow marine life to recover, so fishing and shellfish collection are not permitted. Snorkelling remains welcome and is a great way to see the positive effects of the rahui firsthand.
