Lime Bay Campground

About This Campsite

Lime Bay Campground sits within the 1,300-hectare Lime Bay State Reserve on Tasmania’s Tasman Peninsula, roughly 90 minutes south of Hobart. The sites are spread across a sandy shelf just above the waterline, framed by crescent-shaped beaches with views across Norfolk Bay. Shady spots beneath the eucalyptus make it comfortable in summer, and the campground suits tents, caravans, and campervans alike.

Facilities are basic but functional. Four pump-flush toilets are provided, along with camp fireplaces for cooking, though fire bans are common during warmer months so a fuel stove is strongly recommended. There are no showers, no treated water, and no rubbish collection, so come prepared with your own supplies and pack everything out. Camping is self-registration at the pay-and-display kiosk (credit card only), with fees starting at $13 per night for two adults, $5 per additional adult, and $2.50 per child aged 5 to 17. No bookings are taken, so arrive early during peak periods. The campground fills fast over Christmas, Easter, and school holidays. Maximum stay is 28 days. Dogs are not permitted.

The sheltered bay is ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing straight from camp. A 45-minute walk through coastal headland and eucalypt forest leads to secluded Lagoon Beach, accessible only on foot. History enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby Coal Mines Historic Site, a World Heritage-listed convict settlement just down the road, with free self-guided walks through the atmospheric ruins. Port Arthur Historic Site is also a short drive away, making Lime Bay a great base for exploring the peninsula’s convict history alongside its natural coastline.
