About This Campsite

Lake St Clair Tourist Park sits within the World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, at the southern end of Tasmania’s famous Overland Track. The campground offers powered and unpowered sites for tents, caravans, and small motorhomes, though powered sites are limited to 9 metres in length, making them unsuitable for large rigs. Surrounded by ancient rainforest and positioned a short walk from Australia’s deepest natural freshwater lake at 167 metres, this is one of Tasmania’s most scenic camping locations.

Facilities include a basic camp kitchen with coin-operated BBQ, hot showers at $1 per six minutes, coin-operated laundry, and a shared amenities block. The park operates as a privately run facility inside the national park, so a Tasmania Parks Pass is required in addition to camping fees. Unpowered sites start from around $27 per night, with powered sites from $35 to $48 depending on the season. Sites are nestled among trees with some prone to soft ground after rain, so pegs and a groundsheet are recommended.

The location is ideal for bushwalkers finishing the 65-kilometre Overland Track, but day visitors will find plenty to enjoy as well. A lake cruise connects Narcissus Hut to Cynthia Bay, and several shorter walks wind through moss-draped myrtle forests and along the lakeshore. Platypus are regularly spotted at dawn and dusk near the visitor centre. The nearby Derwent Bridge pub and Hungry Wombat cafe provide options for a hot meal when camp cooking loses its appeal.
