Kooljaman at Cape Leveque
About This Campsite
Kooljaman at Cape Leveque is a 100% Aboriginal-owned wilderness camp on the Dampier Peninsula, 240 kilometres north of Broome at the very tip of Western Australia’s Kimberley coast. Jointly owned by the Djarindjin and Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) communities, the camp has operated for over 20 years and won numerous state and national tourism awards for Indigenous tourism, eco-tourism, and cultural tourism. The setting is extraordinary: red pindan cliffs drop into turquoise water on the western side, while calm white-sand swimming beaches stretch along the eastern shoreline.
Accommodation ranges from deluxe safari tents and log cabins to palm-frond beach shelters and unpowered camping sites. The camping sites are compact (4 metres by 6 metres, tents only, no caravans) and sit among coastal scrub with shared amenities blocks. The entire property runs on solar power with generator backup and uses local bore water, keeping the environmental footprint deliberately low. Raugi’s Restaurant serves meals and coffee on site, and there is a small shop for basic supplies. The road from Broome is sealed most of the way but includes corrugated sections, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
Cultural experiences are a highlight here. Bush tucker walks, mud-crabbing tours, and tag-along 4WD tours led by local Bardi Jawi guides offer genuine insight into one of Australia’s oldest living cultures. Unpowered camping starts from $38 per night for two people. The sunsets from the western beach, viewed against ancient red cliffs sacred to the local people, are consistently described as among the best in Australia.
