Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) Campsite
About This Campsite
Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) is about as far north as you can camp in New Zealand, and it feels like the edge of the world. This iwi-managed campsite sits on a sweeping bay of golden sand near Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga), the sacred point where Maori believe departed spirits begin their journey to the afterlife. The spiritual significance of this place is real, and you’ll feel it in the stillness.
The campground is simple: around 10 sites on grassy ground with pit toilets, cold showers, and drinking water. No power, no kitchen, no bins. BYO everything and take your rubbish with you. The gravel access road is manageable for cars and campervans, though larger vehicles should check conditions. Mobile reception is non-existent out here, so download your maps before you arrive.
What makes this campsite extraordinary is the location. Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes are a short drive away, Cape Reinga lighthouse is at the tip of the peninsula, and the coastline is wild and largely empty. Dolphins pass through regularly, shorebirds work the sand flats, and on rare occasions you might hear kiwi calling after dark. At $10 to $15 per adult per night, it’s a pilgrimage-level New Zealand camping experience.
