Inskip Point Recreation Area
About This Campsite
Inskip Point is the “Gateway to K’gari” (Fraser Island), but it is a legitimate destination in its own right. The camping is divided into five zones, and choosing the right one is the difference between a relaxing weekend and a $500 recovery bill. M.V. Sarawak is the “safer” bet for soft-roaders and heavy trailers as it has firmer tracks and is closest to the bitumen. M.V. Natone and The Oaks are deep, soft sand territories—do not enter unless you have a proper 4WD and you have aired down your tyres before you hit the sand. The massive “Dad Win” here is that unlike the National Park on the island itself, Inskip is Dog Friendly (on a leash). It is one of the few places in Queensland where you can camp right on the beach with the family dog. Facilities are limited to hybrid toilets; there are no showers and no fresh water, so you need to be completely self-sufficient. The Tactical Note: If you are catching the barge to K’gari the next morning, camp near the barge landing point to beat the queue, but be warned: the midges (sandflies) here are ferocious at dawn and dusk. Bring the Bushman’s.
