About This Campsite
Henry Creek is the strategic “Budget Base” for families tackling Milford Sound. Located just 25km north of Te Anau, it is the first DOC camp you hit on the Milford Road. The logic for staying here is simple: you avoid the high price tag of Te Anau holiday parks while positioning yourself for an early run to the Sound the next morning. It’s a “Standard” DOC site, meaning you get a drop toilet and a stunning view of Lake Te Anau, but zero luxury. There are no showers, no powered sites, and the water comes from the stream (boil before drinking). The “Dad Reality Check” here is the sandflies. They are legendary, relentless, and will eat you alive if you stand still. Do not mess around with citronella; bring the DEET. The sites are a mix of gravel (great for campervans) and bush pockets (better for tents), but the ground can be rock-hard, so bring heavy-duty pegs. Critical Logistics: It operates on a First-Come, First-Served basis. You cannot book. While it fills up slower than Cascade Creek, you still want to arrive by 3 PM in peak summer to grab a decent spot. Strictly no pets (National Park).
