Freycinet National Park Camping (Richardsons Beach)
About This Campsite
Richardsons Beach is the premium real estate within Freycinet National Park, but you need to understand the layout before you book (or enter the ballot). The campground is split into two distinct experiences. The Sand Dunes (sites 1-18) are the “Dad’s Pick” for tent campers—they are tucked into the vegetation right on the beach, offering wind protection and privacy. The Powered Sites (19-51) are hard-stand strips; while convenient for caravans to plug in, they are much more exposed and feel a bit like a car park. The water here is calm, shallow, and crystal clear, making it arguably the safest beach in the park for toddlers and paddleboards. The Critical Warning: During the peak summer period (18th Dec – 26th Jan) and Easter, you cannot just book. You must enter the Ballot System (usually opens in July). If you miss the ballot, you miss the trip. Amenities are excellent, with modern blocks featuring hot showers (token operated) and chilled drinking water stations. Strictly no pets.
