Fortescue Bay Campgrounds
About This Campsite
Fortescue Bay is the crown jewel of the Tasman Peninsula, but it forces you to make a choice before you even arrive: Banksia or Mill Creek? The campground is split into two distinct zones. Banksia is the “Instagram” choice—tents only, right on the beach, with incredible views but higher exposure to the wind. Mill Creek is set back in the tall timber, offering larger sites suitable for campervans, motorhomes, and boats, with significantly better wind protection (but fewer views). The road in is a 12km unsealed forestry track; while it is generally 2WD accessible, it can get potholed and corrugated, so leave the lowered sports car at home and drive to conditions. The massive “Dad Win” here is the boat ramp. It is concrete, solid, and gives you direct access to some of the best tuna and flathead fishing in the state. For the hikers, this is the official trailhead for the Cape Hauy track (and the Three Capes end point), meaning you can tackle the famous stairs early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Facilities are decent for a National Park, with gas BBQs and toilets, and—rare for Tassie parks—hot showers (token operated, usually available at the ranger station). Wildlife Warning: The possums and wallabies here are professional thieves. Do not leave food unsecured for a second. Strictly no pets.
