Fletcher Bay DOC Campsite
About This Campsite
Fletcher Bay DOC Campsite is the reward for the “committed dad” who is willing to drive until the map literally runs out. Located at the very top of the Coromandel Peninsula, getting here requires tackling a long, winding, unsealed road past Port Jackson. The Dad Reality Check: Leave the massive caravan at home. The road is narrow, dusty, and has sheer drops; while a confident driver can get a smaller caravan or boat trailer up here, it is white-knuckle territory for big rigs. The campsite itself is a stunning farm-style setting that rolls right onto the beach, offering views across to Great Barrier Island. You are here for one main reason: it is the trailhead for the Coromandel Coastal Walkway. This is arguably the best coastal day-hike in the North Island, and staying here means you can start early and beat the heat. Facilities are standard DOC “backcountry comfort”: drop toilets and cold showers only. You need to treat or boil all water. Because this is prime Kiwi habitat, there is a strict no dogs policy.
