Ellery Creek Big Hole Campground
About This Campsite
Ellery Creek Big Hole is the undisputed champion of swimming spots in the West MacDonnell Ranges, but it comes with a serious “Dad Warning”: the water is freezing. Even when it’s 40°C outside, the water temperature in the deep gorge can induce cold water shock. It is the ultimate way to cool the family down after exploring the Ochre Pits, but keep the swims short for the little ones. The campground itself is simple, rugged, and right next to the waterhole. The sites are unpowered and the ground is classic Central Australian “concrete”—it is extremely hard and rocky. Do not even attempt to use standard wire tent pegs; you need heavy-duty rock pegs or a cordless drill with masonry screws, or you will be sleeping in a collapsed tent. Facilities are limited to gas BBQs and drop toilets; there are no showers and no drinking water (tank water is sometimes available but is untreated, so bring your own). Access is excellent, with a sealed road almost all the way to the campground, making it accessible for 2WD vehicles and caravans. Strictly no pets are allowed as it is within the Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park.
