Discovery Resorts – Kings Canyon is the only logistical choice for families tackling Watarrka National Park, but thankfully, it is a genuine oasis in the desert. The strategy here is simple: you camp here to hit the Kings Canyon Rim Walk at sunrise (before the heat rule closes the gate). The resort facilitates this perfectly, located just 10km from the canyon car park. The absolute “Dad savior” is the swimming pool. After hiking 6km of sandstone domes in the heat, that pool is the only thing that will stop a family meltdown. The campground itself offers powered and unpowered sites with arguably the best view in the Red Centre—the sun setting over Carmichael Crag is iconic. However, be prepared for the surface: it is hard-packed red earth and rock. Standard tent pegs will bend instantly; bring a cordless drill and masonry screws or heavy-duty rock pegs. You also get the convenience of a petrol station, a well-stocked general store, and the Outback BBQ & Grill (live music and burgers), which is a godsend when you are too exhausted to fire up the Weber. Dingoes are extremely active here. Do not leave boots, food, or rubbish outside your tent overnight—they will vanish. Dog-friendly in the campground, but strictly no pets in the National Park.
