About This Campsite
Coolendel Camp is legendary among South Coast campers for one reason: Wildlife. This is not just a campsite; it is a nature reserve where wombats graze by your campfire and peacocks wander through your breakfast setup.
Located on the Shoalhaven River, it offers 2.5km of riverfront camping with sandy beaches, gentle rapids for kayaking, and deeper pools for swimming. The facilities are surprisingly modern for such a remote spot, with hot showers and flush toilets that make the “bush” experience very comfortable for families.
Dad’s Real Talk: The drive in is an adventure itself! It’s about 40 minutes on an unsealed winding road. We managed it fine in our Mazda CX5, but it gets pitch black at night and the twists can be tough on little tummies (we had three spew stops!).
Safety Tip: We saw Red-Belly Black snakes crossing the road up near the lookout, and the campfires can pop hot embers (My son also got a small burn sitting too close!), so keep the first aid kit handy and the chairs back a bit!
The coolest thing was seeing the peacocks and the red-belly black snake! We skimmed stones in the river and I saw things I'd never seen before. Make sure you bring a soccer ball to kick around, and your teddy for the tent. Even though I got sick on the way in, I still want to go back!

Directions and Access Notes
The last 11km (approx 30-40 mins) is an unsealed, winding, and corrugated road through the Morton State Conservation Area. We drove it in a Mazda CX5 and it was fine, but it gets pitch black at night.
⚠️ Motion Sickness Warning: The road is incredibly twisty! We learned the hard way, if your kids get car sick, prep the bags and take it very slow.
Wet Weather Note: Access is possible in the rain, but the concrete causeway river crossing can flood. Always check river heights before driving.
