Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp Campground
About This Campsite
Don’t let the name “Swamp” put you off—Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp is easily one of the most picturesque spots in the Wollemi National Park. Created by the building of the Kandos Weir in the 1920s, this is a deep, tranquil waterway surrounded by striking sandstone “pagoda” rock formations. It’s about 25km east of Rylstone and is a high-utility choice for families who want the “remote” feel without a brutal 4WD trek.
The campground is a mix of open woodland and riverside spots. It’s massive but feels intimate because the sites are tucked among the scribbly gums and boulders. It’s a “choose-your-own-adventure” setup for tents, camper trailers, and small caravans.
The Practical Bits:
The Vibe: Low-key and peaceful. It’s a prime spot for birdwatching, fishing, or just drifting in a kayak between the rock walls.
Water Activities: Southern Cross Kayaking operates on-site (seasonal), so you can hire a SUP or kayak if you don’t have your own.
Hiking: The Pagoda Lookout Track is the must-do. It’s short (2.5km return) but steep—the 360-degree views from the top are the best value for effort in the region.
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for platypus in the quieter parts of the weir at dawn, and watch for wombats wandering through the camp at night.

If you're quiet at dawn, Ganguddy is one of the best places in NSW to spot a Platypus or a Long-necked Turtle.
The campground is home to Swamp Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos, while the trees are packed with over 150 bird species, including Purple Swamphens and Greater Gliders at night.
Just watch your dinner, the local Goannas and Possums are bold and will try their luck with any food left on the table.
Deep Water: The weir reaches depths of 14m very quickly; keep a close eye on kids near the rocky edges.
Cliff Edges: The Pagoda Lookout has no railings and includes some steep rock scrambling, it’s stunning but requires a steady foot.
Fire Risk: Wollemi is a high-fire-danger zone. Always check for Total Fire Bans before lighting the fire rings.
Water Quality: The "swamp" is a healthy waterway, but always check for blue-green algae alerts during hot, dry summers.
Important Rules and Regulations
Booking and Pricing
Note: Pricing now follows a tiered system. Expect roughly $24 during off-peak and up to $45 during peak (school holidays/long weekends). This usually covers up to 2 adults; extra person fees have been simplified or removed in the new 2026 structure.
Free Park Entry: Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp is one of the few parks where no vehicle entry fee applies. You only pay for the campsite itself.
Firewood: Firewood is often provided (included in your fee), but supply can be hit-or-miss during peak times. It’s always safer to bring a backup bag of split wood.
- NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS)
New 2026 "Ghost Booking" Policy:
31+ days notice: 75%–80% refund (NPWS increased this recently to encourage early cancellations).
15–30 days notice: 50% refund.
0–14 days notice: No refund.
Check-in Rule: If you haven’t arrived or contacted the park by 10:00 AM the day after your scheduled arrival, your booking may be cancelled to free up the site for others.
Status and Season
Current Alert (2026): Local pest control programs are occasionally active in Wollemi. Always check the NPWS alerts for "Fire Bans" before lighting your fire ring.
Open all year, but be aware that Wollemi National Park frequently enters "Total Fire Ban" periods during summer. When this happens, all wood fires (including those in rings) are prohibited.
Check the NSW RFS website or NPWS Alerts before you pack the marshmallows.
