About This Campsite
Euroka is Sydney’s closest proper bush camping experience — and it knows it. On any given weekend between October and April, every one of the 40 sites across its five areas fills up, because nowhere else within 90 minutes of the CBD puts you this deep in the scrub with this much to do.
The name Euroka comes from the Dharug word for “sun.” The campground sits in a sheltered volcanic basin where the soil is richer than the surrounding Blue Mountains sandstone, which is why the trees are taller, the grass is greener, and the kangaroos never left. Every evening, a large resident mob of eastern grey kangaroos grazes through the clearings while families set up dinner. It is the kind of thing that makes kids stop looking at screens.
There are five areas — Appletree Flat, Bennett Ridge, Darug, Nioka and Red Gum — each with its own car park. All sites are walk-in (5 to 15 metres from the car), unmarked, and unpowered. Tents only. No campervans, no camper trailers, no caravans.
The practical reality: this is genuine bush camping 60 minutes from the CBD. No drinking water on site (rainwater tank is for washing only — bring all your own drinking water), no showers, no mobile coverage, and the gate is locked at 6pm (7pm during daylight saving). Come prepared or come unstuck.
The trade-off is worth it. Red Hands Cave — 1,600-year-old Dharug hand stencils protected under a sandstone overhang — is a short walk directly from Nioka campsite. Jellybean Pool and Blue Pool are both a short drive for a swim. And the Oaks Fire Trail, which runs past the campground, is one of the better mountain bike tracks in the lower Blue Mountains.
