About This Campsite

Whites Bay Campsite is a DOC standard campsite tucked into a sheltered bay on the Marlborough coast, set among native bush with a sandy beach at the water’s edge. Located at the site of a restored historic 1866 cable station on the Pukatea Stream, this is widely regarded as one of the finest DOC campsites in the region. The bay offers a protected swimming beach, sea fishing, and small boating, while the surrounding hills are home to glow worms that put on a spectacular display after dark along the Pukatea Walk.

The campsite has 67 non-powered sites spread across grassy areas among trees and hills, suitable for tents, campervans, and caravans. Facilities include flush toilets, cold showers, and cold water taps. No fires are permitted at any time. A resident camp host is on site from October to April, and EFTPOS payment is available through the host. Alternatively, self-registration with cash is available. The DOC Campsite Pass can be used outside the peak period from 20 December to the end of Waitangi weekend. No booking is required as sites are first-come, first-served. No dogs are allowed. The campsite gate is locked from 9pm to 7am between Labour Weekend and Easter for camper safety, so plan your arrival and departure times accordingly.

Access is via a scenic but winding coastal road. Turn off SH1 at Tuamarina, 8km north of Blenheim, into Hunter Road, then follow Rarangi Beach Road and Port Underwood Road to Whites Bay. Phone reception is very limited, available only out on the beach. Several walking tracks start nearby, including the Pukatea Walk (popular for glow worms after dark), Monkey Bay Walk, Rarangi to Whites Bay Track, and the Blackjack Track. Mountain bikers can ride the Whites Bay Loop Track, a brilliant downhill trail through the surrounding hills. The charming wine town of Blenheim is about 30 minutes’ drive away.
