Momorangi Bay Campground
About This Campsite
Momorangi Bay is arguably the best “soft entry” into DOC camping for families exploring the Marlborough Sounds. It hits the sweet spot by offering the low-cost, nature-first appeal of a Department of Conservation site while still providing the “civilized” amenities that keep a family holiday running smoothly. Unlike standard bush camps, this is a Serviced Campsite, meaning you get flushing toilets, coin-operated hot showers, and a kitchen facility with electric hot plates. The campground is located just 20 minutes from Picton along Queen Charlotte Drive—the road is winding but fully sealed and accessible for caravans and motorhomes. The bay itself is sheltered and shallow, making it exceptionally safe for swimming with toddlers, while the main jetty provides a prime spot for the older kids to fish or bomb into the water at high tide. The absolute “Dad hero” move here is taking the kids on the short forest walk after dark; there is a legitimate glow-worm grotto just minutes from the tents (turn your torches off to see them properly). There is even a small on-site shop for ice creams and basics during peak season. No pets allowed.
