Kaitoke Regional Park Campground
About This Campsite
Kaitoke Regional Park Campground sits within lush native rainforest on the banks of the Pakuratahi River, just north of Upper Hutt. This sprawling campground has been a favourite for Wellington families for generations, offering expansive grassy terraces spread across multiple levels with plenty of space between sites. The sparkling river loops around the camp, providing excellent swimming in deep pools and shallower paddling spots for younger children. Perhaps most famously, a short walk through ancient rimu and rata forest leads to the Rivendell filming location from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, complete with a replica Elvish archway.
The campground offers both powered and non-powered sites on level grass, suitable for tents, campervans, and caravans. Two roofed BBQ and dining shelters provide free electric barbecues, sinks, and covered seating. Flush toilets are clean and well-maintained, though there are no showers on site. Cold water only is available at facilities, and drinking water taps are located near the shelters. No booking is required as sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis year-round. The park ranger is on site, and gates close at dusk. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. Open campfires are permitted on the riverbed only, so bring your own firewood.
Beyond the campground, the park offers outstanding walking tracks through dense native bush. The Swing Bridge Track is a leisurely 45-minute loop crossing a newly built suspension bridge high above the Pakuratahi River, accessible for wheelchairs and prams. The Ridge Track climbs to wonderful views across the Upper Hutt valley. For adventure seekers, the Hutt River gorge offers whitewater kayaking through moss-covered walls and overhanging bush, though this is strictly for experienced paddlers. Trout fishing is available with a licence in both the Hutt and Pakuratahi rivers.
