Tāwharanui Regional Park Campground
About This Campsite
Tāwharanui Regional Park is widely considered one of the best campgrounds in the Auckland region. The park occupies a peninsula north of Matakana, surrounded by predator-proof fencing that has allowed native wildlife to thrive. Kiwi have been reintroduced here, and you can sometimes hear them calling after dark.
The campground has around 10 unpowered sites in a bush setting, with pit toilets and gas BBQs. There are no showers, no drinking water, and no camp kitchen, so bring everything you need. Sites suit tents and smaller campervans, with some tent-only spots. Pets are not allowed due to the predator-free sanctuary.
Anchor Bay, just a short walk from camp, has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches anywhere near Auckland. The water is clear and sheltered, and the walking tracks through native bush and along the coast are outstanding for birdwatching. The Matakana Wine Region is a short drive away for a day out. At $18 per adult and $6.50 per child, Tāwharanui books out months ahead in summer, so plan early.
