Hamelin Pool Caravan Park
About This Campsite
Hamelin Pool Caravan Park is the closest accommodation to one of Earth’s most remarkable natural features: the stromatolites of Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve. These living rock-like structures are built by cyanobacteria and represent some of the oldest forms of life on the planet, dating back 3.5 billion years. The caravan park sits within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, roughly 280 kilometres north of Geraldton along the Indian Ocean Drive.
The park offers powered and unpowered camping sites alongside self-contained family units and backpacker rooms. Facilities include a swimming pool, communal BBQ area, camp kitchen, laundry, and clean amenities blocks. The on-site cafe and restaurant means you do not need to carry all your own provisions, though the nearest full supermarket is in Denham, about 120 kilometres away. The historic 1884 Telegraph Station building sits on the grounds and adds a layer of outback heritage to the experience.
From the caravan park, it is a short drive to the stromatolite boardwalk where interpretive signage explains the significance of what you are looking at. The broader Shark Bay area offers world-class wildlife encounters including dolphins at Monkey Mia, dugongs, manta rays, and seasonal humpback whale migrations. Shell Beach and the dramatic red cliffs of Francois Peron National Park are also within comfortable day-trip range.
