About This Campsite

Talia Caves Camping Area is raw bush camping on the wild western coast of the Eyre Peninsula, sitting directly opposite the spectacular Woolshed Cave about 40km northwest of Elliston. The campground is reached via a 6km unsealed road off the Flinders Highway and is strictly for fully self-sufficient campers only. There are no toilets, no water, no power, no BBQs and no rubbish collection. What you do get is front-row access to some of South Australia’s most extraordinary geological formations and a coastline that feels genuinely untouched.

The Woolshed is a massive cavern carved into the granite cliffs by millions of years of wave action, with a timber walkway and steps providing access down to the rocks. Less than 400 metres away, The Tub is an enormous crater roughly 50 metres wide and up to 30 metres deep, connected to the sea by a tunnel that sends spray shooting upward during big swells. Beyond these formations, Talia Beach stretches for 20 kilometres of white sand offering rock and beach fishing for the adventurous (experienced 4WD access only to the beach itself). Sea lions, dolphins and southern right whales (winter) are frequently spotted from the cliff tops.

Camping is free with no bookings required, though some sources suggest booking through the Eyre Peninsula visitor system as ranger visits are regular and phone reception is extremely limited. No campfires are permitted. The site accommodates caravans in good weather, though the access road can deteriorate after rain. Take extreme care around cliff edges as the limestone can be crumbly, and avoid swimming at Talia Beach where strong rips and large waves make conditions dangerous. The nearest supplies are in Elliston (40km) or Venus Bay (about 15 minutes drive). For those wanting similar scenery with more facilities, Coodlie Park Farm Retreat is a privately run alternative nearby.
