Cathedrals on Fraser
About This Campsite
Cathedrals on Fraser is the “peace of mind” choice for families tackling K’gari (Fraser Island). While the National Park beach camping is iconic, it comes with the constant stress of dingo safety. Cathedrals is a private campground fully enclosed by a dingo-proof fence, meaning you can actually relax and let the kids play without hovering over them like a bodyguard. It acts as a civilized oasis in the middle of the sand tracks: you get hot showers, flushing toilets, a well-stocked shop (for the milk and bread you inevitably forgot), and even fuel bowsers. The campground is tucked back into the tree line, which provides two massive benefits: shade from the brutal midday sun and shelter from the relentless southeasterly winds that batter the beach campers. It is one of the few places on the island where campfires are permitted (in their provided fire rings, subject to fire bans), which is a huge morale booster for the crew. Access is strictly 4WD only via the beach highway, and while you pay a premium compared to the QPWS permits, the ability to have a hot shower and a safe campsite is worth every cent for a happy family trip.
