About This Campsite
Neds Gully Camping Area is a walk-in tent campground in Cathedral Range State Park, about 100 kilometres northeast of Melbourne between Taggerty and Buxton. You park your car and cross a pedestrian swing bridge over Little River to reach the campsite, a grassy woodland clearing about 50 metres from the car park. With 15 unmarked tent sites surrounded by tall manna gums and the sound of the river, it is a peaceful spot for families and hikers alike.
Facilities are basic: pit toilets and fireplaces without cooking plates, so bring a portable gas stove. There is no drinking water, no bins and no firewood collection allowed in the park, so buy firewood in Taggerty or Buxton before you arrive and carry all rubbish out with you. Creek water from Little River is available but must be boiled or treated before drinking. Individual sites cannot be reserved in advance, but you do need to book and pay through Parks Victoria before arrival.
The real appeal is the walking. From camp, trails lead steeply up to Neds Peak for panoramic views across the Cathedral Range, and experienced hikers can continue to Cathedral Peak or tackle the full circuit walk along the dramatic 7km ridge of sharply upturned sedimentary rock. Easier options include the Friends Nature Walk and Little River Walk along the valley floor, where you might spot koalas in the canopy and lyrebirds on the forest floor. Cooks Mill campground is a 30-minute flat walk along the river if you prefer car-based camping. Sites from $17.80 per night.
