About This Campsite
Tidal River is the heart of Wilsons Promontory National Park and one of Victoria’s most iconic campgrounds. Set where the river meets a wide sandy beach, it’s the base camp for the Prom’s best walks, from the lighthouse trail to Squeaky Beach and Lilly Pilly Gully. The setting is hard to beat: coastal bushland backed by granite peaks, with wombats wandering through camp like they own the place (they think they do).
Speaking of wombats, they’re the main event here. These stocky locals have zero fear of campers and will absolutely investigate your tent, your esky, and your dinner if you leave anything accessible. Crimson rosellas are equally bold, landing on tables and shoulders. Keep your food secure and your tent zipped because the wildlife at Tidal River is entertaining but persistent.
Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, gas BBQs, and a dump point. No campfires allowed (gas stoves only), no pets, no generators, and no mobile reception. Bookings are essential, especially during summer and school holidays when the ballot system kicks in for peak dates. It’s around $62 to $69 per site depending on season, which covers up to eight people. If you only camp at one spot in Victoria, make it this one.
